There are approximately 6 million people in the State of Washington, leaving many tens of thousands of substance abusers looking for effective drug rehab help. There are about 340 drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment centers in Washington.

National survey results indicate that about 3% of Washington citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. This translates to more than 150,000 people. During 2005, there were over 62,000 admissions to drug/alcohol rehabs in Washington. This is up from just over 58,000 rehab admissions in 2004. During 2003, there were less than 50,000 admissions to treatment in Washington.

During 2005, there were 503 methamphetamine laboratories seized in Washington by DEA and state and local authorities, down from 1,456 labs seized in 1996. Realtors throughout Washington are being trained to recognize and report methamphetamine laboratories on properties that they show. The realtors are learning what items are often found in meth labs so they can report the location to authorities. Others who are being similarly trained include garbage haulers, meter readers, and others who may be called to a home.

In 2003, 34.3% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Washington were charged with drug offenses. More than 29% of the drug offenses involved powder or crack cocaine. Approximately 136,000 cultivated marijuana plants were eradicated in Washington under the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program in 2005.

Approximately 10% of Washington 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. The Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration (JRA) provides preventive, rehabilitative, residential and transitional programs for juvenile offenders. The goals are to hold the juveniles accountable for their crimes, protect the public, and reduce recidivism. Close to 80% of youth committed to JRA are substance abusers or are chemically dependent.

According to available survey data, approximately 150,000 (2.94%) Washington citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
